Kalleske Wines - Vineyards

The Kalleske farm and vineyards were established in 1853 at Moppa, a small sub-district of Greenock in the North-Western Barossa Valley. The oldest vines on the property today are more than a century old, dating back to 1875. The 120 acre vineyard is a diverse mix of varieties with Shiraz and Grenache predominating followed by smaller plantings of Mataro, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Durif, Tempranillo, Zinfandel, Chenin Blanc, Viognier and Semillon. The Moppa/Greenock sub-region of the Barossa is regarded as one of the finest districts for high quality wine, especially Shiraz and Grenache. At an elevation of 300-350m, the Kalleske farm is one of the higher localities in the Barossa Valley, being 40-90m higher than the Valley floor at approximately 260m. As well as higher elevation, the vineyard is characterized with varying topography of softly rolling hills and gullies creating gentle cooling breezes. The higher elevation and cooling breezes result in a slightly cooler growing season for the Kalleske vineyard, ensuring gradual ripening and full flavour, tannin and structure development. The Kalleske farm is 500 acres and the 120 acres of vines are planted in over 30 individual blocks across the property. This spread of plantings covers a diversity of topographies, soils and aspects ensuring interesting, characteristic, individuality from each block. The soils vary across the vineyard blocks but importantly red clay underlies all vineyards ensuring Winter rainfall is captured in the subsoil for use by the vines over the Summer growing season. Annual rainfall is typically 500mm, with the majority of this falling during Winter and early Spring. At the Kalleske vineyard, budburst usually occurs in late September, followed by flowering and set in November. Harvest usually begins in the final week of February and typically concludes in mid-late April.

Kalleske Johann Georg Shiraz - Vineyard (single vineyard) Overview: The Johann Georg vineyard is the flagship of the Kalleske farm. It is the oldest vineyard on the Kalleske property and is fittingly named after the first Kalleske ancestor to migrate to Australia. Johann Georg was born in Brätz, Prussia in 1794 and migrated to South Australia with his wife and children in 1838. The vineyard is entirely dry gown, solely relying on natural rainfall. Variety: Shiraz Age: Single vineyard - vines planted 1875 Location: Moppa Area: 2 acres Yield: 0.75-1.25 tonnes/acre Soil: Sandy top soil with traces of quartz over excellent clay subsoil. Barossa Classification: Ancestor vines (>125 years old) Grape characteristics: Strong textural aspect with intense, fine tannins and flavours of black fruits, savoury roast meat and black olive.

Kalleske Eduard Shiraz - Vineyard Overview: The Eduard vineyard blocks are named after Karl Heinrich ‘Eduard�� Kalleske, who together with his wife Anna ‘Rosina�� worked the Kalleske vineyard until the 1880s when their son took over the reins. The vines are dry grown. Variety: Shiraz Age: Numerous blocks, vines planted 1905 �� 1960 Location: Moppa Area: 1 �� 3 acre blocks Yield: 1-1.5 tonnes/acre Soil: Sandy top soil with traces of ironstone over excellent clay subsoil Barossa Classification: Centurion vines (>100 years old) & Old Vines (>35 years old) Grape characteristics: Rich, dark, brooding strong black fruits with a savoury dimension and solid tannins.

Kalleske Old Vine Grenache - Vineyard (single vineyard) Overview: It is the oldest Grenache vineyard on the Kalleske property and one of the Barossa’s and Australia’s oldest Grenache plantings. The vines are dry grown. Variety: Grenache Age: Single vineyard, vines planted 1935 Location: Moppa Area: 2 acres Yield: 1-1.5 tonnes/acre Soil: Sandy top soil with light clay subsoil Barossa Classification: Survivor vines (>70 years old) Grape characteristics: Rich varietal Grenache displaying intense perfume, spice, blackberry, concentration and a hint of choc mint.

Kalleske Greenock Shiraz - Vineyard (single vineyard) Overview: The only Kalleske vineyard not adjoined to the ‘home�� property, the Greenock vineyard is located just South of the Greenock township on the Western edge of the Greenock Creek. Variety: Shiraz Age: Single vineyard, vines planted 1999 Location: Greenock Area: 16 acres Yield: 1.5-1.75 tonnes/acre Soil: Shallow, sandy loam over superb deep red clay and limestone. Barossa Classification: N/A Grape characteristics: Chocolate, plum and fruit cake with solid structural tannins and long length.

Kalleske Merchant Cabernet Sauvignon - Vineyard (single vineyard) Overview: The Merchant Cabernet vineyard is a relative ‘newcomer�� to the Kalleske farm. However, this regal variety produces stunning fruit. Named after the first and seventh generation Kalleske’s, both merchants. Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon Age: Single vineyard, vines planted 1998 Location: Moppa Area: 3 acres Yield: 1.5-1.75 tonnes/acre Soil: Sandy loam with quartz and ironstone over deep red clay. Barossa Classification: N/A Grape characteristics: Classic Cabernet flavours of blackcurrant, violets, ripe herbs. Tannins are strong but integrated and the fruit is lengthy to finish.

Kalleske Moppa Shiraz - Vineyard Overview: The Moppa vineyard blocks are spread over the Kalleske property, ensuring a diversity of topographies, aspects and elevations and thus complex characteristics. Moppa is a small sub-district of Greenock in the Barossa’s North-West. Variety: Shiraz + Petit Verdot + Viognier Age: Numerous blocks, vines planted 1973 - 2005 Location: Moppa Area: 2 �� 8 acre blocks Yield: 1.5-2.0 tonnes/acre Soil: Shallow, sandy loam over deep red clay Barossa Classification: Old Vines (>35 years old) Grape characteristics: Fruit cake, chocolate and blueberry from the Shiraz with perfume and spice from the Viognier and stylish silky tannin from the Petit Verdot.

Kalleske Buckboard Durif - Vineyard (single vineyard) Overview: The Buckboard Durif vineyard is a welcome addition to the old Kalleske vineyard. Named after the sturdy buckboard farm vehicle of years past, this sturdy variety produces strong and solid fruit. Variety: Durif (aka Petit Syrah) Age: Single vineyard, vines planted 2005 Location: Moppa Area: 2 acres Yield: 1.5-2.00 tonnes/acre Soil: Sandy loam with quartz and ironstone over deep red clay. Kalleske Dodger Tempranillo - Vineyard (single vineyard) Overview: The Dodger Tempranillo vineyard is the newest variety on the Kalleske property. It is named after the vine dodger , a mechanical weeder used on the property for almost a century. Very well suited to our red earth and climate the Dodger vineyard produces characteristic and varietally pure Tempranillo. Variety: Tempranillo Age: Single vineyard, vines planted 2007 Location: Moppa Area: 2 acres Yield: 1.5-2.00 tonnes/acre Soil: Sandy with quartz and ironstone over deep red clay. Barossa Classification: N/A Grape characteristics: Classically varietal. Richly fruited with dark cherry, herbs, spice and earth. Fruit displays chewy rustic tannins and a lingering clean finish.

Kalleske Clarry's GSM - Vineyard Overview: The Clarry’s vineyard blocks are spread over the Kalleske property providing a diversity of fruit characteristics. Clarry’s is named in honour of Clarence “Clarry�� Kalleske, who farmed the Kalleske vineyards from the late 1920s until his retirement in the 1990s. Variety: Grenache, Shiraz & Mataro (aka Mourvedre) Age: Numerous blocks, vines planted 1940 - 2005 Location: Moppa Area: 2 �� 8 acre blocks Yield: 1.0-2.0 tonnes/acre Soil: Generally shallow, sandy loam over deep red clay and limestone. Barossa Classification: Survivor Vines (>70 years old) & Old Vines (>35 years old) Grape characteristics: Red rose florals and perfume spice from the Grenache, fruit cake and chocolate from the Shiraz and textural savoury tannin and rustic characters from the Mataro.

Kalleske Rosina Rose' - Vineyard Overview: The Rosina vineyard blocks are named after Anna ‘Rosina�� Kalleske, who, together with her husband Karl Heinrich ‘Eduard�� Kalleske farmed the vineyard from 1853 until the 1880s. Variety: Grenache + Shiraz + Viognier Age: Numerous blocks, vines planted 1940 - 2005 Location: Moppa Area: 2 �� 6 acre blocks Yield: 2.0 tonnes/acre Soil: Generally shallow, sandy loam over deep red clay and limestone. Barossa Classification: Survivor Vines (>70 years old) & Old Vines (>35 years old) Grape characteristics: Perfume, musk, strawberry and freshly crushed raspberry.

Kalleske Florentine Chenin Blanc - Vineyard (single vineyard) Overview: A low-yielding vineyard of rare Chenin Blanc named after Caroline ‘Florentine�� Kalleske, the first daughter of Johann Georg Kalleske who migrated to Australia from Prussia in 1838. Variety: Chenin Blanc Age: Single vineyard, vines planted 1988 Location: Moppa Area: 4 acres Yield: 2 tonnes/acre Soil: Shallow sand with clay subsoil. Barossa Classification: N/A Grape characteristics: Fresh pear, quince, hay and almond.

Kalleske JMK Shiraz VP - Vineyard Overview: Numerous Shiraz vineyards are utilised for the fortified JMK Shiraz VP. JMK is named after John Malcolm Kalleske who has tended the Kalleske family vineyards for more than 50 years. Variety: Shiraz Age: Numerous blocks, vines planted 1972 - 2005 Location: Moppa Area: 2 �� 16 acre blocks Yield: 1.5-2.0 tonnes/acre Soil: Shallow, sandy loam over deep red clay and limestone Barossa Classification: Old Vines (>35 years old) Grape characteristics: Christmas cake, chocolate, dark berry and spice.
